NEW YORK, Sept 14 — Serena Williams was fined US$10,500 (RM36,700) by officials at the US Open for her angry outburst during her semi-final defeat by Kim Clijsters Saturday.
The American was penalized on match point down for her expletive-placed tirade directed at a lineswoman who had called her for a foot fault. The point penalty ended the match.
“The maximum permissible on site fine of US$10,000 has been levied for unsportsmanlike conduct against Serena Williams for her on court behavior during the women's semi-final,” tournament officials said in a statement yesterday.
