When I was 15, dinner was regularly purchased from several 'regular' places. One of these places was a hawker stall that sold 'Chai Tau Kueh' (Fried Carrot Cake). The stall was manned by an old lady who had a 3 daughters that helped her. One of the daughters was the same age as me, and the other two were aged 5 and 8.

Selling 'Chai Tau Kueh' was extremely tiring. It involved stirring pieces of carrot cake around a huge frying pan. Oil regularly splashed around. After awhile, I noticed tht the old lady stopped doing the cooking as the elder daughter took over.

So this girl, who was the same age as me, spent every night cooking and getting her hands burnt by cooking oil. The oily fumes rose up in the air and f87ked up her complexion, causing huge pimples to form all over her forehead. Man, even her hair was oily. So if it her life wasn't miserable enough having to work every night (even weekends), she was one ugly teenager as well.

I know some of you are thinking - 'yeah, but hawkers make a lot of money, right?'. In this case, this family was probably even poorer than I was. They wore worse clothes, drove an shittier car and they never had smiles on their faces.

But they sure sold great 'Chai Tau Kueh' though.

Anyway, fast forward 15 years later. Today, I was queuing up at an ATM in the basement of Raffles City. The eldest daughter suddenly appeared behind me. She was beautiful. She had a cute daughter and a handsome husband. Her clothes looked great and her complexion had cleared up. Her mother stood behind her, older but definitely happier looking. In short, life for them had gotten better, much better.

So I guess the moral of the story here is that even if your life sucks right now, as long as you remain steadfast and hold on - things will eventually change for the better. Tomorrow will be better than today as long as you don't surrender to today.
