GTalk Tip: How do you transfer files?

Posted: 23 Jun 2008 02:08 PM CDT

Google Talk (GTalk) is Google's approach to instant communication. It works just like any Instant Messaging system. Your main interface is a small window that shows you all the online contacts you have, quickly offering you to chat with them instantly.

A feature that I find really useful is the ability to send relatively sized files while a chat session is going on. Imagine you're chatting with a friend online and she'd like to show you a few of her latest vacation shots, that is possible thru the send file feature that your chatbox now shows… check it out below (you can send one or multiple files one after the other):

Here's how to send a file with Google Talk:

1. From an active chat window, click the Send Files button.
2. Browse to the file or files you'd like to send (use CTRL-Shift to select more than one file at a time).
3. Click OK. Google Talk will insert your file into the chat session.
4. At this point, you'll have the option to Cancel the transfer. Doing so will withdraw the offer. Otherwise, your contact can click Accept to download the file to their hard drive, or Decline to reject the transfer.

Here's the best tip of all: You can also simply drag and drop files and folders into an open chat window to initiate a transfer.

Neat GTalk… very neat! :)
